Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton remains as the most high-profile player left on the market. As a result, the New England Patriots continue to be pegged as the frontrunners to land his services.

According to DraftKings' sportsbook, the Patriots are still the favorites to sign Newton in free agency:

Patriots +300
Steelers +500
Redskins +700
Cardinals +800
Ravens +800

The Patriots dominated headlines with their decision to part ways with quarterback Tom Brady. They have since provided every indication that they are ready to move forward with Jarrett Stidham under center and the veteran Brian Hoyer as his backup.

Meanwhile, New England is still trying to secure enough funds to sign safety Kyle Dugger after taking him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. It remains to be seen if the prospect of bringing Newton on board is in the books, even on a generous deal.

The Pittsburgh Steelers also appear to be in the running for Newton's next landing spot. They had been a bonafide playoff contender thanks to the stellar play of the defense, however, it was not enough to overcome their shortcomings under center. Bringing in Newton to serve as a contingency plan for Ben Roethlisberger would give the Steelers a surplus of talent to work with under center.

Signing with the Washington Redskins could give Newton the best chance to compete for a starting job. After all, quarterback Dwayne Haskins is coming off a rough rookie campaign and his status as the No. 1 option would hardly be set in stone under the new coaching regime with Ron Rivera.

Otherwise, it appears as though Newton may have to settle for a backup job in the 2020 NFL season.
