The New England Patriots have shown interest in Mississippi State safety Johnathan Abram, who is expected to visit them, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero.

Abram finished his senior season at Texas A&M with 99 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, five pass deflections, and a forced fumble.

In his career, he had 195 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, and two interceptions.

He is considered to be one of the top safety prospects in the upcoming 2019 draft. Although he has been inconsistent in coverage, he has been a reliable tackler and does well in the box. He plays with a lot of power and has the strength of a linebacker.

He posted some solid numbers at the combine after running a 4.45 second 40-yard dash, in addition to his broad jump of 116. The New England Patriots own six of the first 101 picks in the upcoming draft. They have an aging safety group composed of Patrick Chung (31), Devin McCourty (31), and Duron Harmon (28). But Obi Melifonwu is still on the roster and could compete behind the starting safety group.

To add Abram to their current group of safeties would make a lot of sense, given the infusion of youth it would represent.

Abram is projected to be a Day 1 or Day 2 pick, with the possibly of him being selected in the first round. The NFL free-agent frenzy started with the additions of a lot of safeties to various teams. With ample safety talent in free agency, the Patriots could actually try to land him on day two.

He has been impressive in his interviews. The Patriots are doing everything possible to study up on the former college star.
