The New England Patriots cannot seem to stay out of the spotlight this offseason. Amidst reports about player happiness and the suspension of wide receiver Julian Edelman, the Patriots now have another fire to put out.

Rumors surfaced earlier today about a potential deal getting done that would have sent Gronkowski to either the Tennessee Titans or San Francisco 49ers. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, New England has adamantly denied these reports:

Rob Gronkowski was never getting traded today, per source. There were no deals in place, no deals to get nixed. It’s a non-story.

Scott Zolak of 98.5 the Sports Hub solidified the notion of the non-existent discussions.

Just spoke with someone high up in Patriots organization, ashamed by buzz generated on social media & Reddit. Unequivocally 100% no talks of trading Rob Gronkowski

The thought of the Patriots parting ways with Gronkowski was surprising, to say the least. When healthy, he is not only the best tight end in the league but arguably its best receiver. That said, losing a player of his caliber would have likely left quarterback Tom Brady and the rest of the fan base fuming. However, it is clear that the Patriots are doing what they can to dispel the rumors.

As shocking as a trade may have been to some, it does not appear to be too far-fetched. Gronkowski made headlines this offseason when he was admittedly contemplating retirement after the 2017 campaign. As a result, there was some speculation that the Patriots could potentially look to cash in on a deal while they still can. However, it appears they have no intention of trading “Gronk” while he is still playing.
