According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the New England Patriots have traded quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2018 second-round pick.

Garoppolo is in his fourth year in the league, all spent with the Patriots as the primary backup to Tom Brady. He has played sparingly in his career with 690 passing yards on 67 percent completion percentage with five touchdown passes and a 106.2 passer rating. The 25-year old made two spot starts last season during Brady's four-game suspension, throwing four 502 yards with four touchdowns before suffering a shoulder injury.

The decision to move on Garoppolo could be a clear indication that team believes that Brady will be playing for several more seasons. The 40-year-old is currently in his 18th-year league and is coming off his fifth Super Bowl win, which is most by any quarterback in league history.

However, this move puts New England at just one quarterback on the roster that should result in another transaction to add depth at the position.

What this also signals is that the 49ers will presumably be out of the running for Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins next offseason in free agency. Garoppolo is currently in the final year of his three-year, $3.4 million deal.
