The New England Patriots have worked out former Green Bay Packers safety Josh Jones, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Jones was released by the Packers late last month.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at North Carolina State, was originally selected by Green Bay in the second round (61st pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He played in 16 games during his rookie campaign, making seven starts. During that time, he registered 67 tackles, a couple of sacks, an interception and five passes defended.

Jones then appeared in 13 contests while making five starts last year, finishing with 55 tackles and a sack.

However, when the Packers signed safety Adrian Amos and then drafted fellow safety Darnell Savage in the first round earlier this offseason, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Jones' departure.

Jones asked for a trade not long after, but nothing came of it before he was finally cut shortly before the start of the regular season.

The Chicago native had a strong collegiate career, capping off his tenure at North Carolina State by racking up 109 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and eight passes defended.

But, Jones' NCAA production has not translated on the NFL level. At least not yet.

Surely, he will be picked up by someone, but it remains to be seen if Jones will ever live up to expectations.

The Patriots routed the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 33-3 in their season opener last weekend and will take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
