The New England Patriots have announced that they're working on a deal to secure defensive end John Simon, according to a new report.

According to SB Nation, Simon is one of the few free agents that the Patriots are holding onto. They've lost four free agents so far, so this is a good move for the team.

However, it bears stating that the deal with Simon is only a one-year deal. In the past, he's been played in rotation with other players like  Trey Flowers, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Adrian Clayborn.

John Simon, however, doesn't have the best stats in the league. He's a solid player, however, and closed out the last season with some pretty regular stats. He finished the year with 21.9% defensive snaps played and 19.6% played on special teams snaps, and registered 21 combined tackles, 2.5 sacks and 4 quarterback hits in 14 in-game appearances for the world champions.

There's all the more reason for the Pats to keep Simon on, especially since they've lost Trey Flowers to the Detroit Lions.

From SB Nation:

“The Patriots picked Simon up on a one-year deal to bolster their defensive edge a month after the veteran got released by the Indianapolis Colts — a move that worked out well for both parties. While the defensive edge still remains an area that likely will be addressed, retaining Simon brings some stability to the group.”

John Simon played college football at Ohio State, and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He has also played for the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts.
