With the 2019 NFL season set to begin, it appears the New England Patriots are looking to secure some potential depth in the secondary with safety Su'a Cravens.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, brought in Cravens for a workout on Tuesday:

This is an interesting one: The Patriots worked out former Redskins second-round S Su’a Cravens today, source said. He most recently played for the Broncos.

Cravens was initially selected by the Washington Redskins in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He quickly became an integral part of the defense thanks to his versatile skill set and was being used as both a safety and a linebacker.

He finished the year with 34 tackles, one interception, one sack, and five passes defensed. His career then came to a screeching halt when he suddenly announced his intention to retire prior to the 2017 campaign.

Cravens eventually went back on his decision was reinstated by the league before being traded by Washington to the Denver Broncos last offseason. He spent the bulk of his tenure in Denver on injured reserve and was released during the final roster cuts after this preseason. The 24-year-old is now looking to take advantage of a new opportunity in New England.

The decision to workout Cravens is certainly an intriguing one for the Patriots. They already boast tremendous depth over the top with Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon, and Obi Melifonwu.

Regardless, it is clear that they are still doing their due diligence before the start of the 2019 campaign.
