New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung was forced out of this past Sunday's Super Bowl victory over the Los Angeles Rams after suffering a broken arm. He was shown on the sidelines in a sling after returning from the locker room to cheer his teammates on to victory. Chung is a fierce competitor as well as a very tough player, as he refused a ride to the locker room and walked under his own power.

Chung will reportedly have surgery on his arm later this week and is slated for surgery on a lingering shoulder injury he was experiencing throughout the season. Chung was fantastic this year, accounting for 84 tackles and providing a fantastic veteran presence to one of the league's best defenses.

New England won their 3rd Super Bowl in the last five seasons and Chung has been with the Patriots for each of those. The Patriots defense is always full of guys who don't necessarily have the big name, but do possess strong playmaking ability as well as a strong presence against opposing offenses. The Patriots will likely look to keep Chung after his contract is expired considering his surgeries appear to be solely maintenance-based.

The Patriots have Chung locked up until 2020, but face a lot of uncertainty elsewhere on defense as several key players will be free agents after the 2018 season. Trey Flowers, Jason McCourty, and Eric Rowe are key players that are now free agents who play key roles on the Patriots' defense. It will be interesting to see who they're able to bring back.
