The New England Patriots have ushered in some significant changes heading into the 2020 NFL season. Fortunately, wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is on track to making a healthy return by then.

San underwent surgery on an ankle injury he suffered during the 2019 campaign. According to NFL Network's Michael Giardi, he is out of the boot and ready to start his rehabilitation:

This is certainly an encouraging update for Sanu. He suffered the injury almost immediately after he was traded to New England from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a second-round pick. While he was only sidelined for one game, it became evident that it was something that he had to play through the rest of the season.

Unfortunately, Sanu failed to provide the Patriots with much bang for their buck after merely etching out a modest role for himself in the passing game for then-quarterback Tom Brady. As a result, he finished the year 26 receptions, 207 receiving yards and a touchdown following his trade.

With Brady gone, the onus will fall on the rest of the offense to pick up the slack. Of course, it remains to be seen which quarterback he will be catching passes from once the competition between Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer is decided by head coach Bill Belichick.

Regardless, Sanu will need to find a way to make a significant impact if he hopes to vindicate the investment New England made in order to bring him over.

Sanu started his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted the wideout in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He then moved onto the Falcons in 2016 before being sent to New England prior to the 2019 trade deadline.
