The New England Patriots established themselves as a team that very much relies on running backs last season, and besides Sony Michel, Rex Burkhead was someone who managed to receive a lot of playing time during the teams Super Bowl-winning postseason run.

After signing with the Patriots two seasons ago, Burkhead is determined to continue being a key factor for the Patriots, and is even working out differently in an effort to stay healthy.

According to Burkhead, the running back has begun doing things like yoga and pilates in an effort to become more flexible.

“Your body takes time to recover, mentally, physically and there’s some little things you can pick up too, whether that is yoga or pilates, things like that just to make sure your body is in the best shape possible,” Burkhead said via Pro Football Talk. “When you make it far you really have to stay on top of that, especially here, you understand your body is your temple and it’s your line of work.”

According to Burkhead, he’s also learning from older teammates, like Matthew Slater, how to prepare for future seasons. This is likely an important thing for Burkhead, as he’s only managed to play in 18 of the 32 regular season games for the Patriots.

Because of the many injury woes, it seems as if Burkhead is determined to put that behind him and be a key player for the Patriots moving forward.

Although New England has two excellent running back options in Sony Michel and James White, Burkhead gives them another dimension and the ability to line up more players in the slot, something the team values heavily.
