After missing Thursday’s quasi-Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead has made his way back into the team’s practice. According to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald.

Apart from the Eagles game, Burkhead was also away from the field during the team’s previous four practice sessions. It was earlier reported that Burkhead is nursing a slight tear in his right knee, though, his appearance on Sunday’s practice offered a sign that the injury isn’t serious in nature.

The Patriots have yet to determine their starting running back for Week 1 of the regular season, but Burkhead is assumed as the favorite to win that role, with rookie tailback Sony Michel recently undergoing a procedure in his knee. It was just a minor surgery that won’t keep Michel out long, but there’s a chance he won’t be ready for Week 1.

Burkhead is not without competition for the starter role, as the Patriots still have the likes of James White, Mike Gillislee, and newcomer Jeremy Hill, but he’s expected to produce more this year, as the team will have to find ways to replace the 180 carries Dion Lewis had in 2017.

Last season, Rex Burkhead rushed for 264 yards on 64 touches to go with five touchdowns. He also had 254 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions.

The 28-year-old Burkhead signed a three-year contract worth $9.75 million with the Pats back in March.
