The New England Patriots suffered a disappointing 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII on Sunday night. It has apparently pushed All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski to voice uncertainty about his NFL career for the 2018 season, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald.

This is quite an interesting situation given that Gronkowski is still under through the 2019 season, as he has two years left on his six-year, $54 million extension with $19 million left in both base salary and bonuses. However, this does bring to the forefront the physical grind and toll he's gone through in his career.

Gronkowski was a huge factor in Super Bowl LII, putting together a huge outing with nine catches for 119 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. With all but nine of his receiving yards coming in the second half, Gronk was key in helping the Patriots grab a 33-32 midway through the fourth quarter. Tom Brady and his tight end tied the NFL record with Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Jerry Rice by connecting for 12 touchdown passes in the playoffs.

The 28-year-old has experienced success in the postseason in his career, as he ranks first at his position with 975 receiving yards and third all-time with four career 100-yard receiving performances. His 12 postseason receiving touchdowns are tied for second all-time with John Stallworth, trailing only Jerry Rice’s 22.

Although Gronkowski is contemplating his NFL future, it's likely a statement that he is making with his emotions running high after a tough loss in the Super Bowl. He made it clear he will give a couple of weeks of thought before making a final decision.

If Gronkowski calls it a career, he has certainly made his case to be a Pro Football Hall of Famer one day as one of the greatest tight ends in league history.
