Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera is very familiar with Cam Newton from their time together with the Carolina Panthers, and he believes the newest member of the New England Patriots thinks he is heading in the right direction.

Rivera doesn't have inside information but based on the videos he has seen, he believes Newton is healthy:

“He's headed in the right direction,” Rivera said on the McNeil & Parkins Show on 670 The Score. “I mean, he's probably about as healthy as it gets from what I've seen on video. I think he's ready to bust out.

“I would never bet against the young man, that's for sure.”

Newton has dealt with injuries the last few years, which still seems to be the big concern heading into the 2020 season. If he is 100 percent healthy, the belief is he can have success, but him being healthy still seems like a big if.

Rivera believes that Newton has always put a lot of pressure on himself after being the first overall pick. a black quarterback, and winning the Heisman Trophy. With everything that has been on his plate, Rivera believes Newton has done a great job:

“He's a guy that's always tried to do things, I think, because he's felt the pressure. He felt the pressure of being the No. 1 overall pick. He felt the pressure of having won the Heisman Trophy and being the No. 1 overall pick. He felt the pressure of being a black quarterback, with all the stuff that's been heaped on him.”

“He's really had to find his way through it, and he's done a great job with it.”

Newton isn't guaranteed the starting job, but if he is healthy and looks during good during training camp, it's hard to imagine the Patriots would keep him on the bench.
