Cam Newton received an endorsement from former Carolina Panthers teammate Shaq Thompson as the former MVP prepares for his inaugural season with the New England Patriots.

Thompson expressed his happiness for Newton, who signed with the Patriots on Sunday after being released by the Panthers in March. Thompson also claimed Cam still has plenty of gas left in the tank (via Grant Gordon of NFL.com):

“Man, I was happy for Cam,” Thompson said of Newton signing with the Patriots. “I hated that it took so long for him to get signed. He's an MVP quarterback. Cam still has it. And I'm happy for him, I'm glad the Patriots invested in him and I can't wait to see Cam Newton come out there and play.”

Newton has wasted little time getting to work with his new teammates. He worked out with Pats receiver Mohamed Sanu.

Fellow Patriots wideout Julian Edelman also welcomed Newton to the team, even using Newton's unique font and style.

Plenty of others around the league expressed their excitement for Newton. Others, including San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, were enraged a former MVP would be making essentially the veteran's minimum in the prime of his career.

But as Newton himself stated Thursday, it is not about money. Cam is out to reclaim respect from executives and talent evaluators throughout the league.

The 31-year-old worked out all spring and summer in the hopes of landing a job. Now, Newton's peers–such as Thompson–are excited to what he has in store for the Patriots.
