New England Patriots running back Sony Michel was one of the more notable faces that were missing from the team's mandatory minicamp. It appears there was a legitimate reason for his absence.

The Patriots appear to be doing what they can to ensure the health of their players by the time the 2019 NFL season starts. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

Running back Sony Michel missed the final portion of the Patriots offseason workout program due to a knee scope, according to a source. Should be ready for training camp.

Michel's surgery may appear as a cause for concern to some. Fortunately, it seems to just a preventative measure from the Patriots. The Patriots are taking a cautious approach with his recovery since he is no stranger to these types of injuries.

New England took many by surprise when they selected Michel with the 31st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Running backs that are taken so early are usually expected to make an immediate impact. Unfortunately, he struggled to find his footing early on as a rookie after suffering a knee injury during training camp. It is safe to say that this hindered his transition to the NFL at the start of the season.

Fortunately, Michel was finally able to find his rhythm and establish himself as a valuable 1-2 punch in the backfield alongside James White. Of course, his position group is looking a bit more crowded this offseason. He will need to be as healthy as possible if he hopes to follow up on his promising rookie campaign.
