After an impressive 2019 campaign, cornerback Stephon Gilmore has firmly established himself as one of the league's best defensive aces. Football fans would most likely think that a player of his caliber would be indispensable for any team.

However, the New England Patriots thought otherwise and have been reported to involve the 29-year old player in trade talks during the recent offseason.

NBC Sports Boston reporter DJ Bean shared the news via Twitter:

There is no doubt that the rest of the league would gain an interest in acquiring Stephon Gilmore. He has been a solid contributor throughout his eight seasons in the league, dating back to his rookie days with the Buffalo Bills.

After a five-year stay in the Big Apple, the cornerback relocated to the New England Patriots where he further cemented his legacy. He also turned out to be a pivotal player in the team's championship run in Super Bowl LIII back in 2018.

In 2019, Stephon Gilmore led the league in pass deflections with 20 and interceptions with 6 through 16 games played for the Patriots. He grabbed his third trip to the Pro Bowl along with his second first-team All-Pro inclusion. He was also named as the 2019 NFL interceptions co-leader and the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

A day before their opening game against the Miami Dolphins, he received a $5 million raise, bumping his base salary of $10.5 million to $15.5 million in 2020. He is now entering the fourth year of the five-year, $65 million deal that Gilmore signed as a free agent back in 2017.

Despite the trade rumors swirling around, the South Carolina native is still a New England Patriot as of the moment and will continue to be a key player for the team's secondary moving forward.
