The New England Patriots made an attempt to shore up their thin receiving corps earlier this week, signing former Denver Broncos and Houston Texans wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas split the 2018 campaign between the Broncos and the Texans, getting traded from Denver to Houston midway through the season.

He played in 15 games total, hauling in 59 receptions for 677 yards and five touchdowns. However, in Week 16, he saw his year come to an end when he tore his Achilles.

Obviously, no one really knows what to expect from a 31-year-old coming off of a major injury, but Thomas could certainly represent a low-risk, high-reward pickup for the Patriots, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore is excited about the addition of the wide out:

“He’s a great player,” Gilmore told reporters on Thursday, according to Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com. “He’s made a lot of great plays in this league, and he’s tough to cover, tough to bring down. Couple things that stand out with him. Strong, explosive. Hopefully he can help us win games.”

In his prime, Thomas was certainly one of the best receivers in the league.

From 2012 through 2016, the Montrose, Ga. native made four Pro Bowl appearances, registering over 1,000 yards in five straight seasons. His best year came during the 2014 campaign, when he caught 111 passes for 1,619 yards and 11 scores.

Thomas began to show signs of declining in 2017, when he snared 83 balls for 949 yards while reaching the end zone five times. It marked the first time he finished with under 1,000 yards since 2011.

He was originally selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
