The New England Patriots decided to tag former wide receiver Julian Edelman with a failed physical designation before they released him from the team's lineup. After the move, the veteran then formally announced his retirement from professional football after playing 12 seasons in the league.

By doing it, Edelman will be able to collect money before his retirement as opposed to simply being waived from the team's roster.

Per Ben Volin of The Boston Globe via WEEI:

“Edelman is now able to collect $2 million in injury protection for 2021. New England will have still have to account for $1.2 million of it when it comes to the salary cap, in addition to $2.67 million in dead cap money.”

He first arrived in Foxborough back in 2009 as a seventh-round pick who played quarterback for Kent State from 2006 to 2008. Edelman eventually made the switch to wide receiver in order to make things work for his career in the league.

Despite playing a new position, Edelman successfully adjusted well as he emerged to become a valuable contributor in the team's three Super Bowl victories. He also managed to make a huge impact as he was named Super Bowl MVP in their championship victory against the Los Angeles Rams back in 2018.

However, his reoccurring knee injuries troubled him as he only tallied a total of 315 receiving yards on 21 receptions through six games played in the 2020 season. His dismal production signaled that it might be the end of the road for him after spending 12 years with the Patriots organization.

At 34 years old, Julian Edelman ultimately became one of the team's most beloved players in franchise history and it is only fitting that he gets credit for all the contributions that he has made for the Patriots all throughout his career.
