New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from the game of football last week, a decision that wasn't really surprising, but was still jarring.

Gronkowski has caught 78 touchdown passes from Tom Brady, twice as many as any other receiver Brady has thrown to. When that stat was posted by the NFL on Instagram on Sunday, Brady had a rather interesting response, saying that he hoped 78 wasn't the final number.

Of course, this doesn't really mean all that much. Brady posted a laughing emoji next to his response, so he could just be joking around, but could this be his way of trying to persuade Gronkowski to come back?

Or, perhaps Brady knows that Gronk will return at some point?

Some find it hard to believe that the 29-year-old Gronkowski is done with football, suggesting that he may just be retiring temporarily to get healthy before getting back on the field at some point in 2019.

However, given the amount of injuries Gronkowski has had over the last several years, you can certainly see why he would want to call it quits.

The future Hall-of-Famer is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he hauled in 47 receptions for 682 yards and three touchdowns, and while that is a fine season for most other tight ends, it was a lackluster one for Gronkowski, who was barely even a shell of his former self.

Gronkowski, who played his collegiate football at the University of Arizona, was originally selected by New England in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft and went on to make five Pro Bowls with the Pats.
