New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a different set of standards for himself. What passes as a great performance for most other players is merely considered mediocre by Brady.

Brady made his preseason debut last week in a quasi-Super Bowl rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles at home. In that game, Brady played in the entire first half, completing 19 of 26 passes for 172 yards to go with two touchdowns and without an interception. By all means, that’s as good of an outing anyone could expect from a 41-year-old quarterback – except Brady himself.

During a recent appearance on WEEI's Kirk and Callahan, Brady implied that he’s still far from his top form (h/t Tyler Sullivan of 247 Sports).

“You’ve got to take the preseason games for what they are. It’s kind of a step in the preparation and it goes along with a lot of the other things we’re doing, but it was good. We haven’t added any joint practices this year, so kind of being in these competitive situations — if you haven’t been in those in a long time, which I haven’t, since the Super Bowl — you always feel a little bit rusty.”

Brady knows that veterans like him don’t need the preseason as much as the younger players, but it still helps them gauge where they stand in terms of conditioning and chemistry with their teammates.

Having received a relatively heavy workload against the Eagles, Tom Brady may get shorter playing time this Thursday against the Carolina Panthers on the road.
