Unless the New England Patriots are able to re-sign him, it appears as though veteran defensive end Trey Flowers will be playing his professional football somewhere other than Massachusetts next season. Slated to become an unrestricted free agent over the summer, Flowers is reportedly recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

However, according to a report from Mike Reiss of ESPN, the procedure was merely a “cleanup” with Flowers more than likely returning to full health by the time he finds his next home.

“New England Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers, who projects as one of the top free agents on the market, is rehabbing from a recent shoulder surgery that is not considered serious, league sources told ESPN. The surgery was described as more of a cleanup,” reads the weekend report from ESPN.

Now just 25 years old, Flowers' best football might yet still be ahead of him while he has spent his entire NFL career in New England as it stands today.

“It can be commonplace for players to have such surgeries after the season, as it accelerates their timelines to potentially be ready for the offseason program and other activities,” Reiss added. “Flowers' timeline, compared to most others around the NFL, was condensed after the Patriots' season ended Feb. 3 with the Super Bowl LIII win.”

The Patriots have notably won three of the last five and two of the last three Super Bowls after capturing the team's latest title with a win over the upstart Los Angeles Rams last month.
