The New England Patriots have placed wide receiver Josh Gordon on the injured reserve list, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Gordon has been battling a knee injury and did not play during the Patriots' 33-0 win over the New York Jets this past Monday.

In six games this season, Gordon logged 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown and never looked quite right.

Gordon initially joined the Patriots last year after coming over in a midseason trade with the Cleveland Browns. In 11 games with New England in 2018, he caught 40 passes for 720 yards and three scores.

However, in December, Gordon announced he would be stepping away from the game to work on his mental health, and not long after, it was revealed that he had been hit with an indefinite suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy.

Gordon, who played his collegiate football at Baylor, was originally selected by the Browns in the second round of the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft.

He had a terrific rookie campaign, finishing with 50 catches for 805 yards while reaching the end zone five times. He then broke out the following year, hauling in 87 receptions for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl and earning a First-Team All-Pro selection.

But between 2014 and 2017, Gordon played in just 10 games due to a string of drug-related bans, wasting a good portion of what could have been a historically great career.

The Patriots acquired wide receiver Mohamed Sanu earlier this week, so they may have seen this coming. They have gotten off to a 7-0 start.
