With reports emerging about Matthew Stafford's imminent exit from the Detroit Lions, a number of teams have emerged as frontrunners to land the highly sought-after quarterback in the offseason. As it turns out, the New England Patriots headline Stafford's list of potential destinations, along with the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos.

This is according to NFL insider Michael Lombardi via The GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi & Adnan Virk podcast:

“The Colts have $64 million (in cap room), count them in… The Patriots, $57 million, count them in on Matthew Stafford… The Broncos, maybe? They have $14 million, but they have to clean up their cap… So I think it's a three-team race, I think it's the Colts, the Patriots, and the Broncos will linger. That's it.”

The Lions have made it clear that they intend to part ways with Stafford during the offseason, which has more than a few teams scrambling. The general belief is that the Patriots are likewise going to lose their quarterback in the near future with Cam Newton reportedly also on his way out of New England. As such, the Pats appear to be in search of their new star QB, and there's no denying that Stafford absolutely fits the bill.

New England, however, will need to contend with the Colts and the Broncos, who themselves are looking at an upgrade in the quarterback post. Whatever the case may be, this is certainly a race that is worth keeping an eye on in what should be an eventful offseason.
