The New England Patriots are far from finished.

Bill Belichick and Co. have already headlined the unofficial start of free agency with a slew of moves. But they also appear intent on upgrading the running back position.

Michael Giardi of NFL Network reported the Patriots have “strong interest” in Leonard Fournette, and have also reached out to Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson.

The Fournette interest is notable considering Belichick is attempting to pry him away from his former quarterback, Tom Brady, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fournette was tremendous for the Bucs come playoff time. He scored in each of the team's four wins, and tallied 135 yards from scrimmage in the Super Bowl.

Carson, meanwhile, has had more established success in the regular season in the past couple years. He rushed for over 1,100 yards in 2018 and 2019, amassing 968 yards from scrimmage and nine total touchdowns in 12 games this past season.

The Seahawks elected not to use the franchise tag on the 26-year-old, who could be among the most desirable running backs after Aaron Jones re-signed with the Green Bay Packers. Carson did have a fumbling issue in 2019, however, which might give the Patriots some pause.

It is at least slightly surprising to see New England are pushing hard for a running back.

Sony Michel has been mostly disappointing, but 2019 third-rounder Damien Harris averaged 5.0 yards per carry this past season. He certainly looked like the feature back of the future.

New England might otherwise look to keep adding to the front seven or be on the hunt for another receiver. But the Patriots are apparently angling towards making a move in the backfield.
