The New England Patriots may be looking to upgrade their roster on the defensive side of the football following a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII. On Wednesday, an attempt to do just that fell flat as the team attempted to trade for veteran defensive end, Michael Bennett.

The Seattle Seahawks were shoping Bennett around the league with what appears to be a lot of interest in the three-time Pro Bowler. Seattle is seemingly in rebuild mode with Bennett no longer a part of the long-term plan. The Patriots, along with a few other notable teams, expressed interest in Bennett.

Ironically enough, the Patriots parted ways with Michael's brother, Martellus Bennett, around the same time the Eagles acquired the one-time Super Bowl champion from the Seahawks. The veteran tight end returned to New England late last season after an ugly divorce with the Green Bay Packers and now is a free agent once again.

As Martellus looks to continue his NFL career after a short stint with New England, Michael will start over with the reigning Super Bowl champions. The Eagles are in win-now mode and for good reason following their success this past season. The addition of Bennett is a step in the right direction for Philadelphia as they bolster an already talented defense.

New England, however, will likely continue to try and improve on the defensive side of the football during the offseason whether it be through trades, free agency, or the 2018 NFL Draft. The Patriots hope to bounce back with a vengeance while taking advantage of what may be only a few more years of having superstar quarterback Tom Brady under center in New England.
