New England Patriots fans are still waiting to find out whether tight end Rob Gronkowski is going to retire. The news that it was even an option caught them by surprise. But in light of recent reports, it sounds like it’s been something Gronkowski has been contemplating for quite some time.

According to NBC Sports Boston Patriots insider Tom E. Curran, Gronkowski thought about walking away from the game during training camp last year.

Curran said that it’s, “starting to wear on him mentally and physically, the atmosphere in Foxboro…He seriously considered stepping away from the game in training camp.”

That makes it seem like something is going on in New England that is not good or maybe even fishy. Why on Earth should one of the best players on a perennial Super Bowl contender be so stressed out? Is the pressure to always be in the Super Bowl too much? Bill Belichick too demanding? Could there be some sort of divide between coaches, players, and/or ownership that we don’t know about?

Who knows, but with people encouraging him to join the WWE or head to Hollywood, it isn’t like he is going to stop making millions anytime soon.

So, the question becomes whether or not he is willing and able just to walk away from the game. Some of his recent tweets are making it hard to guesstimate just where his head is at.

Is he going to go? Or is he going to stay? For now, the mystery continues.
