New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore took the league by storm last season as he was named the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His newfound success playing in Bill Belichick's defense has surprised one of his former teammates.

Former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia joined the daily Locked On Auburn podcast to preview the Auburn and South Carolina matchup with host Zac Blackerby. The conversation turned to some of his former teammates, including Gilmore. Garcia and Gilmore both played for Coach Steve Spurrier during the 2009-11 seasons for the Gamecocks. Gilmore went on to be drafted inside the top 10 in the 2012 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Buffalo Bills at No. 10.

Blackerby asked the former quarterback about being teammates with Gilmore and if his success for the Patriot surprised him. He claimed that Gilmore relied too much on his physical traits in his college days.

Blackerby: I forgot you were teammates with Stephon Gilmore. He was a top 10 pick to Buffalo and did okay then he goes to the Patriots and he’s one of the best defenders in the league. Does that surprise you at all?

Garcia: Uh, yes. You know Stephon is a great dude and a great player obviously. But in college, he didn’t really do a whole lot, to be honest, but when you’re 6-2 or 6-3 and run a 4.4 and have good cover skills that’s going to get you paid and he did. So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised foe hare he is at and I’m happy for him.
