One of the most coveted free agents of 2019 could break the bank this upcoming offseason. New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis stands to make as much as a whopping $235 million extension over a five-year supermax deal with the team, according to ESPN Insider Bobby Marks.
The salary cap is set to balloon to $116 million for 2020-21, which would allow The Brow to make a whopping $47 million annual salary if he chooses to stay in The Big Easy.
This is yet another reason why the Pelicans have been hesitant to pull the trigger on a max deal for DeMarcus Cousins, as it could impede this potential signing down the road, as well as clog any possibility of re-signing the likes of Rajon Rondo and Nikola Mirotic, who played a key role in taking the team to the postseason.
Davis is still considered the franchise's cornerstone player and is sure to be rewarded with the same respect, but only time will tell if the Pelicans are able to convince him to stay put with a wave of teams creating cap space for 2019, hoping to land their next big free agent.
