Thanks in large part to the efforts from Anthony Davis and Nikola Mirotic, the New Orleans Pelicans kicked off their 2018-19 regular season campaign with an impressive 131-112 win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

Several Pelicans played well in Wednesday's victory, but Davis and Mirotic were on another level. In fact, Davis and Mirotic became the first pair of teammates to each produce at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a season opener since Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, according to a report from Justin Kubatko of StatMuse.

Davis and Mirotic combined for 62 points against the Rockets.

In his 39 minutes of playing time, Davis posted 32 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field, 16 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Though New Orleans had it going on the offensive end of the floor, Davis credited his team's defense for the win.

“We moved the basketball and we made shots, but we put our hats on and defended,” Davis told ESPN after Wednesday's game. “To come out with a win against a team like that after the season they had and coming off the season we had, we wanted to come out and set a tempo for ourselves.”

Simply put, Mirotic was hot from downtown. The Montenegrin-born forward played 30 minutes against the Rockets, scoring 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field (6-of-8 from beyond the arc), 10 rebounds, and three assists.

Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry was pleased with his team's performance.

“It was a good win for us, but to be honest, we feel like if we play at the level we're supposed to — we're not surprised,” Gentry said. “We played exactly how we have to in order to beat that team.”

The Pelicans will be back in action on Friday night, when they'll welcome the Sacramento Kings to the Smoothie King Center. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. EST.
