The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million veteran's minimum deal with free agent forward Dante Cunningham, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.
The 6-foot-8 forward was being closely eyed by the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were also in search of a three-and-D asset.
Cunningham has a career-changing season in 2016-17, shooting 48.5 percent from the floor and 39.2 percent from deep — an asset that has proved to be his meal ticket to stick in the NBA. While his 6.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game aren't impressive in any measure, it is his ability to keep in front of his man and knock down the open shot which have made him a valuable asset to keep.
The Villanova alum was expected to make his decision at some point today, choosing to stay home for another run with an improved and now-solidified supporting cast.
New Orleans had only the veteran's minimum to offer for his services, just like Minnesota — making the rather obvious choice the more comfortable one after spending the last three seasons of his eight-year career in the Big Easy.
