New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday says his injury woes make summer workouts a lot of fun because “you know exactly why you’re doing it.”

Holiday missed the final 15 games of the 2018-19 season due to a core muscle injury which required surgery. The Pelicans' floor general missed 90 games from 2013 to 2015, although he was healthy in 2017-18, playing in 81 games.

Holiday has been working out relentlessly this summer and is ready to be the face of the Pelicans franchise now that Anthony Davis is gone.

“When you’ve been off the court as much as I was, there’s so much motivation to stay on it,” Holiday told Scott Kushner of The Advocate. “It makes this time of year a lot of fun really, because you know exactly why you’re doing it and why each day and each workout matters.

“Last year, I wasn’t injured when I started, but this year I’m coming off of surgery, so we’ve had to tweak some of what we did to do more for my core. I’ve gotten a lot of rest, but had a longer way to come back. That’s been a bit of a tweak. So I really needed to focus on nutrition and strength building.”

Last season, Jrue Holiday played in 67 games. He averaged 21.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 7.7 assists while shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 32.5 percent from beyond the arc and 76.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Pelicans GM David Griffin said earlier this offseason he believes Holiday can win the MVP award in 2019-20. For that to happen, Holiday has to stay healthy and he's putting in the work this summer.
