New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball has been officially ruled out for Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, which was slated to be the first time that the former Lakers point man was to face his former team.

Ball has been dealing with an illness over the past two days and was tagged as questionable earlier Wednesday.

Without Ball, the duo of Frank Jackson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are two of the likeliest candidates to see some additional run. Meanwhile, Jrue Holiday should now have the ball in his hands for a vast majority of the contest.

There are multiple storylines to the matchup between New Orleans and Los Angeles stemming from the blockbuster deal that the two organizations agreed upon during the summer. Anthony Davis, who was the centerpiece of the trade, will be playing in his first road game in New Orleans.

Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart, who were vital cogs to the Pelicans agreeing to the deal, are facing the Lakers for the first time in their careers.

Ball, who began the season as a full-time starter, has come off the bench in each of the team's previous three games. He missed six games earlier in November and has averaged 11.1 points, 5.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per contest since joining New Orleans.

His illness denies him the opportunity to suit up against his former club, but he'll next get the chance at facing the Lakers on Jan. 3. New Orleans' next contest comes Friday against the Thunder, a game in which Ball's status remains up in the air.
