Anthony Davis may have dropped a bombshell on the New Orleans Pelicans to start the week by telling them that he wants to be traded, but that does not mean the Pelicans are going to move him before the Feb. 7 trade deadline.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Pelicans feel no pressure to trade Davis over the next week-and-a-half, which makes plenty of sense for numerous reasons.

First and foremost, Davis does not possess the ability to opt out of his contract until next summer, so the Pelicans still hold team control over Davis through 2020.

Second, the Boston Celtics can likely offer the most attractive trade package for Davis, but due to the Rose rule (explained here), the Celtics cannot actually trade for Davis until the offseason.

So, it certainly makes sense for the Pelicans to hold on to their superstar at least until the summer, when they will be able to take their time considering offers rather than feeling rushed within a two-week window to trade a 25-year-old who is arguably the best player in basketball.

Things have definitely changed suddenly in New Orleans.

Last year, the Pelicans made the second round of the playoffs and looked like one of the better teams in the Western Conference. Many even expected them to contend for a top-four seed coming into this season.

However, New Orleans has posted a record of just 22-28 over its first 50 games to fall out of postseason contention. With the Pelicans appearing very far away from contending, Davis obviously feels it's time to move on.
