Nothing is going right for the Philadelphia Phillies. They're losing in embarrassing ways and playing far, far below the lofty expectations they set for themselves. To make matters worse, one of their key players, Jean Segura, will be sidelined.

Segura suffered a fractured right index finger in the Phillies' 11-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants. While he recovers from injury, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com suggests Didi Gregorius could be brought back up from the Triple-A level.

Segura, a 32-year-old second baseman, bats at the top of the Phillies lineup. He has the team's second-best batting average at .275 and its third-highest OPS at .731 (among qualified hitters) through 44 games played. Although his defense is not very impressive and he doesn't walk much, he also doesn't strike out much and still hits the ball pretty hard.

Nick Castellanos continuing his tradition of interrupting more serious moments of broadcasts with home runs is the only source of pride for the Phillies right now. With their bullpen regularly giving away free runs and manager Joe Girardi is being out-managed just as regularly. Firing him is more of a question of “when” than “if” at this point — or, at least, it should be.

The Phillies still have time to right the ship but they have a lot to fix. The Jean Segura injury is just another reason to worry about their playoff drought reaching 11 years.
