The Philadelphia Phillies have been talked about as one of the most intriguing names in the sweepstakes for either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. They have a large amount of money to spend and they are a team that is beginning to trend in the right direction. While Harper and Machado would be huge for the Phillies, they have gone out and signed another outfielder.

According to a report from Buster Olney of ESPN, the Phillies have agreed to a three-year contract with McCutchen worth $45 million.

McCutchen is certainly be an intriguing pickup for the Phillies. He won't be the guy that leads them back to the postseason, but will be an excellent supporting cast member.

Last season split between the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees, McCutchen recorded a .255 batting average to go along with 20 home runs and 65 RBI's. He may not be the superstar that he once was, but McCutchen is still a solid bat that can play above average defense as well.

If the Phillies are able to sign McCutchen and then also sign either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, they would be sitting pretty offensively. They need to bring in a couple quality bats to help get their lineup back on track. McCutchen certainly won't be the only move they make in free agency this offseason.

At 32 years old, McCutchen is past his prime. He is not going to be the guy that can power an offense, but is likely well worth the three-year contract for the Phillies.
