The Detroit Pistons have signed free agent Luis Montero to a two-way deal, as they were intrigued with his upside, and could potentially give them additional depth in their guard rotation.

The 24-year-old Dominican Republic international played last season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Reno Bighorns of the G-League. He made 49 total appearances and averaged 8.8 points, 5.9 rebounds,  1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Montero is also a career 33 percent shooter from beyond the arc, and could bring his shooting skills to the Pistons who are in need of floor spacers that will give Andre Drummond more room to operate inside the paint.

Montero also has experience playing the NBA as back in the 2015-16 campaign, he suited up for the Portland Trail Blazers for 12 games. Although he only saw limited action with them, the opportunity taught him a lot and a better understanding of what it takes to earn a roster spot with a team playing at the highest level.

The details of the deal were not specified but it’s expected that Montero will compete with the likes of Ish Smith and Langston Galloway for the backup position behind Reggie Jackson, who is their undisputed starter.
