The Detroit Pistons are declining their team option on small forward Glenn Robinson III’s contract, per The Athletic’s Michael Scotto. Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent when the market opens on Sunday, June 30th.

The five-year NBA vet will seek a new home after stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers and now Detroit Pistons.

Robinson, 25, started in 18 games in his lone season with the Motor City franchise. He averaged 4.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest in 47 appearances, shooting 42 percent from the field, 29 percent from 3-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line.

While known for his three-ball prowess, an ankle injury derailed Robinson’s tenure in Detroit — first missing multiple games and then losing a spot in head coach Dwane Casey’s rotation.

Robinson earned roughly $4.2 million in 2018-19 with the Pistons. Detroit is expected to use the cleared space to target new players via free agency (or perhaps use some of the room created to sign freshman forward Sekou Doumbouya, Detroit’s 15th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft).

It’ll be a tough offseason for Detroit, who is trying to build an identity with All-Star forward Blake Griffin. The Pistons also have big man Andre Drummond signed to a max deal.

Detroit needs major upgrades at the point guard and the wing positions if they want to have a legitimate chance in contending in the Eastern Conference — one which contains the Milwaukee Bucks and reigning league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Philadelphia 76ers and the reigning NBA champions Toronto Raptors.
