Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey lauded the NBA for its quick response in suspending the season after news broke that Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert was tested positive for COVID-19.

Per Michael Lee of The Athletic, Casey called the unfolding of events “unprecedented.” For him, sports have always served as a means to “ease” much more serious world concerns. Now, things are different as the entire league is in a precarious state.

“It’s something that’s unprecedented. It’s always been where you could lean on sports to ease your nerves or ease the situation. But now, we’re just like everyone else,” the Pistons coach said.

In addition, Casey acknowledged that lots of players came in contact with Gobert. He praised NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for not thinking twice to postpone the season.

“It shows how fragile it is. Here it is, a player, he’s in our league. A lot of players have come in contact with [him]. That’s a concern. That’s why it’s prudent for Adam to suspend the season, until we get a grasp of it,” Dwane Casey added.

Rudy Gobert and the Jazz actually dueled with the Pistons on March 7. Though the center was just diagnosed as positive on Wednesday, the COVID-19 is asymptomatic in nature. This means that a person infected with the virus may not necessarily show symptoms but can still infect other people.

The NBA will use the downtime to evaluate their next step. This will include how they can help prevent the spread of the virus and how the 2019-20 season will pan out.
