The NBA has decided to grant the Detroit Pistons a $5.2 million dollar trade exception, according to a report from Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports.

The Pistons, now the fourth-ranked team in the Central Division standings with a 26-26 overall record, have seen several of their key players go down with injuries this season, including Reggie Jackson (ankle), Jon Leuer (ankle), and recently Andre Drummond (ankle).

Rod Beard of the The Detroit News reported in January that the Pistons were seeking such an exception from the NBA for Leuer.

“They will seek a disabled-player exception for forward Jon Leuer, who has played just nine games this season after suffering an ankle injury on Oct. 31. The DPE is a provision that allows teams to get a break in their salary-cap numbers in the event of a catastrophic injury.”

Exactly what the Pistons will choose to do with their exception remains to be seen. They would need to make a deal if they wanted to create an open roster spot, as Beard reported on Tuesday.

The Pistons will be back in action on Wednesday night, as they're scheduled to host the Brooklyn Nets inside Little Caesars Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. EST with Fox Sports Detroit and the YES Network having live broadcast coverage. Detroit hasn't lost since their acquisition of Blake Griffin. Let's see if they can keep their momentum rolling.
