The Detroit Pistons are in the midst of a wide-reaching search for the team’s new General Manager, who will work alongside executive Ed Stefanski. One notable candidate is former Pistons legend (and NBA champion with Detroit) Tayshaun Prince.

Though it was originally reported that the Pistons were uninterested in hiring Prince in the role, more recent reporting on Wednesday made it clear that Prince was still in the running, but as an Assistant GM, according to Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.

“I'm hearing the Pistons have not ruled out Tayshaun Prince as a candidate for a front office role,” Sankofa said in a Tweet. “The team is looking at making up to two hires — an experienced exec as GM, and an up-and-comer as an assistant GM. Prince is viewed as a strong fit for the latter.”

This came after Eric Woodyard of ESPN reported that Prince was out of the running for the position:

“As Detroit continues its GM search, multiple sources tell ESPN that the Pistons haven’t requested permission to interview former Piston Tayshaun Prince for the role,” Woodyard Tweeted on Wednesday.

Prince, who played 14 seasons in the NBA with 4 different teams, was a four-time All-Defensive team selection and an NBA champion with the Pistons in 2004. The veteran spent the most productive seasons of his career in Detroit, and now serves as the Memphis Grizzlies’ Vice President of Basketball Affairs.

For the Pistons, the search continues, and keeping it “in the family” would likely be a popular move among the Pistons’ fanbase — even if it is only as Assistant GM.
