After clearing waivers on Saturday, veteran shooting guard Wayne Ellington will officially sign a free agent deal with the Detroit Pistons, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Miami Heat traded Ellington to the Phoenix Suns in the Tyler Johnson-Ryan Anderson trade. Ellington and Phoenix quickly reached a buyout agreement.

The Pistons traded shooting guard Reggie Bullock to the Los Angeles Lakers, so they were in need of perimeter shooting. Ellington fits that bill, as he's shooting 36.8 percent from the 3-point line this season.

Wayne Ellington has career averages of 8.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 617 NBA games. He shoots 41.0 percent from the field, 38.0 percent from beyond the arc and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line.

The Pistons are 25-29 on the season, good for ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings. The team is trying to make the playoffs this season for the first time since 2016. Ellington figures to help Detroit in that regard since he's a proven shooter and solid locker room presence.

Ellington can get a lot of wide-open looks in Detroit since he's playing alongside All-Stars Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond. Pistons point guard Reggie Jackson can collapse the paint on his drives to the basket as well, which will free Ellington for good shots from the 3-point line.
