The Detroit Pistons were in the gutter of the Eastern Conference last season, but they do have some intriguing pieces that should give them optimism for the future. Cade Cunningham is a budding star, Saddiq Bey is a very solid player, and Jerami Grant, if he stays, is the perfect fit for this young, rebuilding franchise.

The Pistons have been rumored to potentially go after marquee free agents Jalen Brunson and Deandre Ayton, but it appears there are two other guys they could very well pursue as more cost-effective options: Dennis Schroder and Mitchell Robinson.

Sources say Detroit has also been weighing the free-agent pursuit of Dennis Schröder as a more cost-effective option for the Pistons’ backcourt. Detroit, furthermore, has been frequently linked to Knicks free agent big man Mitchell Robinson, who remains eligible for an extension with New York through June 30.

Schroder, in particular, is an interesting name to pop up. He's struggled to find a home across the last couple of seasons, going through a disappointing campaign in LA with the Lakers before going to the Celtics this past season. However, they traded him to the Rockets at the deadline and he now becomes an FA. For the Pistons, Schroder could give Dwane Casey's squad some much-needed backcourt depth and experience. The German is a respectable shooter and playmaker who can also offer leadership to this young core.

As for Robinson, he can still sign an extension with the Knicks by June 30th, as Stein pointed out. If not, he becomes a free agent. The big man is a physical presence on the boards and that would definitely help Detroit, who lacks frontcourt figures who can rebound. They finished 24th in the league in that category in 2021-22.

The Pistons also have the No. 5 overall pick in this week's 2022 NBA Draft.
