Detroit Pistons power forward Blake Griffin has been traded before, and it could very well happen again. However, it appears as though the former Los Angeles Clippers standout won't be moved before Thursday afternoon's trade deadline, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

“The pro-rebuilding crowd wants Griffin traded, 74 games into his Pistons tenure,” writes Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. “Trading him would signify the start of a true rebuild, something that’s probably needed since Detroit hasn't won a playoff game since 2008. Trading Griffin is an avenue that will likely be explored — but not by 3 p.m. on Thursday.”

Pistons senior adviser Ed Stefanski technically kicked off such buzz back in December — well, sort of.

“If we’re asked to give up a big asset like a first-round pick to help the growth of the franchise, we would consider it,” Stefanski told the Detroit Free Press back in December. “But that deal would have to be where we really felt the player coming back would move the needle. If we weren’t sure of that, to make a big commitment with assets, I think could really hurt us. We can’t make a deal to set the franchise back. We have to be very careful about that.”

The 23-29 Pistons are currently six games under the .500 mark with no significant progress in sight at the moment. Still, such a mark places the struggling Pistons in ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings with much of the 2018-19 season left to play, and they're only 1.5 games behind the Miami Heat for the final playoff spot.
