With Pokemon Day celebrations in full swing, the Pokemon Company has been showering fans with a whole host of updates and teasers about the franchise's various games, even including the release of special artwork. While the anniversary itself is on February 27, the week leading up to the big day has been nothing short of surprises. The company has dedicated each day to one title, with Sword and Shield on Tuesday and Cafe ReMix today, for example. But aside from that, special anniversary art has also dropped. This has led fans to speculate on whether these are teasers for upcoming games and hints for possible announcements during Pokemon Day itself.

It's no secret that Pokemon fans have been highly anticipating remakes of old games or possibly an announcement about Gen IX games. When the special illustration showing a bunch of Gastly chasing Dawn and Piplup came out, many in the community jokingly linked the art to Sinnoh remakes. Even Serebii webmaster Joe Merrick joined in on the fun and lightheartedly tweeted about the “confirmed” fourth gen remakes.

For several years, remakes of the Diamond and Pearl games were definitely something that fans had been asking for. But when Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl came out for the Switch, many felt quite dissatisfied with how faithful the new games were to the original. BDSP didn't feel like the answer that the community was looking for at the time, especially overshadowed by the hot release of Legends Arceus. Unsurprisingly, it gave birth to plenty of memes.

Memes aside, many fans are enjoying the special artwork released, sending a fresh wave of nostalgia. All the illustrations show the protagonist trainer and at least one of the starter Pokemon for each region and generation. We begin with Red and Blue scenes with the Kanto starter trio and Professor Oak, followed by Ash/Red and Totodile facing a menacing Red Gyarados in Pokemon Gold and Silver. The third generation or Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire art features May and Treecko as well as Hoenn Champion Steven.

Whether the art has anything to do with updates on Pokemon Day remains to be seen. After all, they seem more like standard promotional material that pays tribute to past generations, rather than hinting at anything in particular. Still, if the Gen IX rumors hold any weight, then fans just might get a glimpse of a starter or two if new art drops on Pokemon Day.
