Portal writer Erik Wolpaw is eager to work on a hypothetical Portal 3 if only Valve would allow the team to do so.

Speaking at the Kiki Talkz podcast, Portal and Portal 2 co-writer Erik Wolpaw revealed that he's itching to work on Portal 3 already. However, as fans would know, Valve is allergic to the number 3, as evidenced by their refusal to work on any third mainline game for any of their series.

“I am not getting any younger,” says Wolpaw, who also said that the team should start working on Portal 3 now if they were ever going to release it anytime in the future. “We are reaching the point where it’s crazy to think [that we’re] literally going to be too old to work on Portal 3, so we should just do it.”

Portal will get a new release with the Portal Companion Collection, which was announced for the Nintendo Switch back in February. The game is set to release sometime this year, although an exact date has not been revealed yet.

However, getting Portal 3 out doesn't seem realistic, which Wolpaw says will take a considerable effort to even pull off. “They’re working all the time, it’s just you don’t always see the [result], it doesn’t always end up coming out, or it comes out years later, it gets turned into something else. So everybody is accounted for, I guess is what I’m saying. People are all doing something,” says Wolpaw. Getting a full team from Valve's about 300 folks would require them to be pulled out from their current projects, and it won't be that easy to convince Valve to actually prioritize Portal 3 over any of their other projects. “So there’s a lot of opportunity cost to taking 75 people and trying to get a game made.” He even joked that it might take a “revolution” to actually get people to work on Portal 3 – such is how the individuals in the company are currently immersed in different projects.
