Marcus Mariota has agreed to a deal with the Oakland Raiders, and this is a very smart move by Jon Gruden and company. It didn't work for Mariota with the Tennessee Titans, but a change of scenery might be all he needs to turn around his career.

Let's break down three reasons why the Raiders signing Mariota was a genius move.

3. Low-risk move

There hasn't been an announcement of how much the contract is worth for Mariota with the Raiders, but it's hard to imagine the Raiders were breaking the bank with this move.

This wasn't a place where the Raiders gave up a draft pick or a player to get Mariota on their team. All they have invested in Mariota is money and it's only probably for a year or two.

If it doesn't work out, they are out a little money, but that is a low risk in the NFL.

2. Maybe all he needed was a change in scenery

There is no doubt that Mariota hasn't lived up to the expectations in his career, but he has shown flashes of being the quarterback that was a standout with the Oregon Ducks. During the 2016 season, Mariota threw for 3,246 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

The legs are a weapon for Mariota and maybe a new offensive system is all that he needs.

If it turns out that it isn't the offensive system and it's more about Mariota isn't a very good quarterback, it was a low-risk move, and there is nothing lost by the Raiders.

1. He will push Derek Carr….or could take over for him

It appears for now that Mariota will be the backup for the Raiders but it could be an open competition during camp, and that could bring out the best in Carr. Much like Mariota, Carr has been inconsistent during his career, and this could be his last chance.

During the 2019 season, Carr threw for 4,054 yards, 21 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing 70.4 percent of his passes. It was a good season but given the comments from Gruden, it has been clear he still isn't sold on him being the quarterback of the future for the team.

If Carr struggles in the first couple of weeks, the team could make a change and go towards Mariota. Who knows, maybe Mariota could lead the Raiders to a lot of success, and maybe he could be the quarterback of the future for the team.
