The drama surrounding Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown and his dispute with the NFL regarding his helmet continues. Things culminated in Raiders general manager Mike Mayock expressing frustration yesterday that Brown was still not with the team, although Brown’s agent recently responded, saying that Brown won’t be gone for too long.

Speaking on ESPN (via Pro Football Talk) earlier this morning, Drew Rosenhaus said that Brown should be returning to the team soon. However, Rosenhaus disputed the idea that Brown was acting selfishly, noting that the superstar receiver is instead just trying to be as precautionary as possible when it comes to his health.

“I do think he’s going to be back soon,” Rosenhaus said. “We’re looking into any and all options right now to resolve the helmet issue. Antonio is very genuine. He wants to be there, he wants to be part of the team, he wants to practice, but he’d also like to do it with the helmet he’s worn his entire life. He wore this helmet in pee-wee football, high school football, college at Central Michigan, and he also wore this helmet his nine-year career.”

Rosenhaus went on to say that few players have worn the same helmet for the entirety of their career, which explains some of the hesitancy surrounding Brown’s unwillingness to switch.

“He’s a wide receiver. He gets hit across the middle. People are trying to take his head off. He’s a big target. You talk about how many catches he’s had over the last six years, for example, this is his life. He’s risking everything. He’s got a family. He’s had a concussion before. This helmet has kept him safe. He’s had brutal hits. And we’re just trying to find a way to work it out.” Rosenhaus said.

While the Raiders are ready for Brown to stop and rejoin the team, it seems as if Brown is still hoping to reach some sort of solution with the league. Unfortunately for him, it’s unlikely that happens, but that won’t stop both Brown and his agent from trying to work toward that goal. In the meantime, the Raiders will have to be as patient as possible.
