It's never easy to come out as part of the LGBT community. Despite an improvement in how most people accept gay people, there's still a lingering sense of fear. For Las Vegas Raiders lineman Carl Nassib, however, the decision was an easy because of one simple reason.

Speaking on Comeback Stories with Darren Waller and Donny Starkins, Nassib reveals that he felt he owed it to the LGBT community to come out of the closet. The Raiders lineman wanted other gay youth to hopefully find inspiration in his story to eventually come out as well.

“When I decided to come out, it was not easy. Personally, for my life, I didn't want to do it. But I felt a huge obligation to my community, to all the young kids out there who are struggling with their sexuality. If I could help just a few of them out, then I could sleep better at night.”

Nassib made history last June when he publicly announced his sexuality, becoming the first openly gay active player in the NFL. It couldn't have been easy, as the NFL and football culture in general could be a bit harsh towards members of the LGBT community. Luckily for Nassib, the Raiders have been incredibly supportive of their lineman. Raiders QB Derek Carr said that no one on the Raiders locker room treats Nassib any differently before his announcement.

Carl Nassib is doing great work for the LGBT community with his announcement. As he said in the interview, his efforts would be worthwhile if he has helped a few kids be more comfortable with themselves. Hopefully, Nassib and the Raiders can do more for the community, but this is a very important first step towards progress.
