Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib made waves back in June when he announced that he’s gay via Instagram. That lit up social media, with Nassib getting plenty of praises from even people who have zero interest in football.

It was also a watershed moment for the NFL as there had been no player before Nassib who came out as gay while still active on an NFL roster. For Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, Nassib is the furthest away from being a distraction for the team, saying also that he has not observed anything negative in the locker room with regards to having a teammate who’s part of the LGBT community.

Via  Paul Guttierez of ESPN:

“When he came in [the locker room], I just like to watch, and not one person, from my point of view, has treated him any different,” Carr said. “He may have a different story; I don't know. I don't know what his story is. But from my point of view — his locker is just a few down from mine — and I just want to make sure that he knows that, man, we just want him to play as hard as he can so we can win a Super Bowl. That's what we're here to do.”

The NFL should feel proud about how the Raiders have been giving Nassib support. What matters to them is his play on the field and the results.

Carr and the Raiders missed the playoffs in 2020 with an 8-8 record. They will kick off their 2021 campaign against the Baltimore Ravens on September 13.
