The Oakland Raiders have undoubtedly been one of the most disappointing teams in the 2017 NFL season. After entering the year with the highest of expectations, the Raiders have stumbled into the season finale with a 6-9 record.

Although their disappointing year can be attributed to lackluster performances on both sides of the ball, the struggles on offense were especially glaring in Todd Downing's debut season as offensive coordinator. Despite the rough offensive campaign, head coach Jack Del Rio reiterated his confidence in Downing as a play-caller, according to Scott Bair of NBC Sports California:

“Obviously a lot of things have gone in a negative direction, but I do know [Downing] is super bright and is going to be a real good coach in this league,” Del Rio said. “I believe in him. Those are not things that people want to hear right now. The reality is that we’ve underperformed offensively this year, so naturally there will be those types of questions. We all understand that. He understands that. I understand that, but it doesn’t change my belief. It’s what I know. But there have been some tough sets of circumstances and things have not gone real smooth.”

Downing signed with the Raiders after they had decided to part ways with then-offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. Needless to say, the offense has taken a huge step back since then.

Last year, Oakland scored the seventh-most points in the NFL while ranking sixth in total offense for the regular season. However, they managed to barely outperform some of the worst offense in the league this season. As a result, both Downing and Del Rio could be on their way out after this Sunday.
